Cleaning tip for the Dirty Floor

For those of you who are trying to limit the chemicals in your house, you might find this interesting (or you may already know this).

Vinegar is supposed to be a great disinfectant and cleaner according to all the forums and blogs I've been reading lately. So when I needed to clean the kitchen floor, I pulled out the container of white vinegar, mixed it with some water and started scrubbing the floor. Well, I was sadly disappointed to find that vinegar did about as good a job as water alone. However, what I did find, and I'm sure I read this on someone's website, is if you mix vinegar and baking soda together, it multiplies the cleaning power!

So as I scrub my little sections of dirty linoleum, I'm wetting the floor with vinegar/water and sprinkling with baking soda. This combination is doing as good or better a job as the noxious chemicals I've been using, without the smell or potential hazard of the chemicals.

Oh, and something else I learned, you can't mix the baking soda and vinegar and then put it on the floor - the acid of the vinegar cancels out the base of the baking soda and it has the cleaning power of water - you have to mix it on what you are cleaning (found this out the hard way).

Hope this tip helps some one!

Thanks so much for the suggestion! I used some vinegar/water mix on my windows because I heard it takes off water spots from windows, it didn't work as well as I had hoped. so I might try the baking soda thing too.
Thanks for sharing,
Julianne :)

Vinegar and a couple tbsp of Borax with hot water does the trick!! Super easy, just mix and scrub - I add a couple of drops of essential oil as well. I find it works just as well as the Mr. Clean I use to use, but is cheaper, better for your family and for the environment!

I have some posts on cleaning tricks and making your own cleaning supplies if you wanted to take a peak :)
